Professor James is the Director of the prestigious Global Cities Institute (RMIT) and Academic Director of the Globalism Research Centre (RMIT). The programme provides a unique model for cities across the globe to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to long-term and intractable challenges based on the ten principles of the Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.

As with Smart City Futures, the Institute engages in cutting-edge and applied research that has real-world consequences, focusing on globalism, nationalism and localism, social theory with a concentration on theories of culture and social formation, contemporary politics with an emphasis on debates over social change.
